How We're Helping the Philippines

Philippine Tom

As you look around our site, you'll come to realize how much I love this country. I say this country because I'm still in Lapu-lapu, Cebu as I'm writing this. It's June 24, 2010 and now I have less than 2 weeks left before I go back to Florida. I will have been here for 55 days this time.

To this date, I have been here 6 times. When you look around our site, you'll learn how and why I developed so much interest about your country, beginning back in 1995. Little did I know back then what that insignificant event would lead to!

Fast forward to 2005, I made my initial visit here. But I have to admit, at that time and a couple of trips here afterwards, I was always ready for my return flight to Florida. My stays ranged from 1 week to 3 weeks. This is the first time I extended my visa so I could get as much accomplished as possible. Besides my family and my dog, the only other thing I miss is some of the food I'm used to eating back home (and my recliner)! In fact, it's been several weeks since I had a hot shower because as you know, most dwellings here don't have a water heater, but you know, I don't even miss it anymore.

I love this country and the people here. The men, women, and especially the children and the elderly. And as you know, most people here are getting by, but they sure could use a better plan.  When I spend money here in the Philippines for whatever the reason I'm happy because I feel my little purchase is helping, even in such a small way.

sponsor childrenEvents and circumstances led me to a family in Carcar. It's a long story about how and why our paths were crossed which is described in detail in my e-book, but the thing is that no one in that family ever asked me for anything, even though like most, they could use the help. After about six months of communication, both in emails and using video chat in yahoo messenger, we all knew each other so well, even though we had never met in person. I knew so much about them and most all of the family members, and felt as if they were my 2nd family.

At that time, the grandmother had passed away, grandfather was sick and he soon passed away, 3 of the sisters were working in Saudi Arabia as overseas workers, and some of the children were being raised by the husband of one of the sisters, and his Aunt. I was becoming very fond of all of them, but especially the daughter of one of the sisters who was ten years old at that time. Out of all the kids, she was the one who most often was transferred from family member to family member.

Again, they never asked me for any financial help, so it was my idea to support the education of that child. She finished her current year of school, which as you know, the school years are from June - March here. We enrolled her into a private Christian school to begin her next grade, and the school accepted her but required her to attend summer classes so she could catch up before the regular class began in June.

That kid is amazing! Even at the age of 10 she was so focused, beginning her day at 7:00 AM by getting ready for class, all the way up to 7:00 or 7:30PM when she finishes her session with her tutor. That schedule continues even now that she is 12.

donate for kidsFinally in 2009 I did meet them in person, and while I was there I became aware of a cousin who was 17 at the time who had finished her primary education, but like most here, she couldn't attend college because of the expense. It was really stretching my budget but I began to support her as well, however she couldn't keep up with the demands so she isn't with us anymore.  We have already replaced her though, and this young lady has just began her 1st year of college.  More about her later as time goes on, but for now, I'll only tell you that she is awesome as well!

As of today I'm still only able to support the education of those 2 kids, but I look forward to this business becoming successful and allowing me to inspire many, many more. And since I have someone in my life now who has the same dreams as I do, it's sure to happen!  We have many other ideas as well which you will see when you look around, but at this time, I will ask your help in a few ways.

IDEAS! What suggestions do you have for me? What would you like to see me accomplish here? So far, I've only been in Cebu, except for my visit to Bohol in the initial part of this trip. I'm open to traveling to other islands but I need your feedback and comments. Our email addresses are listed below.

PASS THE WORD! The websites are still not even open at the time of this writing, but when we open them my next challenge will be to learn how to direct traffic to them. There has never been a better way than "word of mouth" and I'm sure there never will be so if you are impressed, please tell your friends and family.

PURCHASE OUR ARTICLE ARCHIVES! I promise that your tiny monthly investment will help a child in a very big way.  I'm making this promise to you, I've already made it to my family and so many others, and I have also made it to God. Keep in mind that not only will I be needing your content, pictures and videos for our site, but I'm hoping you will allow me to acknowledge you for giving them to me!

As we grow we will be in a position to do more and more, and any deserving families you bring to our attention will certainly be considered. We will need more and more help from the Philippine people here and of course we will compensate for any tasks that are completed for us. One thing that comes to mind now is that depending where your family members live here, if they have a digital camera and can get some pictures to us, we could sure use them and will compensate for them. Another thing I've recently realized that would be a big help is good, interesting content for our arcitles.

For now, I'll only offer my sincere thank you for checking into our work, and I HOPE we have a long arrangement together, because as you certainly know, a little bit of money will go a long way here. We're looking forward to making lots of friends along the way, and we're honored that you have given us this opportunity.
